New Zealand fur seal, Arctocephalus forsteri, VT2760
Physical Description
Two lumbar vertebrae of a NZ fur seal. Extremities are slightly worn and weathered.
Provenance
Brought to the Otago Museum by Mr John Dennison who is the forensic anatomist at the Otago Medical School Anatomy Dept. Apparently someone (original collectors not known) found it on Campbells Bay beach, Kakanui, early this month & believed them to be human bones. They were referred to the police who asked John Dennison to ID. John knows they were NOT human but asked us to ID them.
ID as Arctocephalus forsteri by SMH, John Dennison was notified of the identification, the bones were then subsequently offered to OM to keep. Mr Dennison
