Amphora, Neck, E48.231
Physical Description
Black figure neck amphora.
Description from "Greek Vases in the Otago Museum”: In front, Dionysus, the god of wine, is seen surrounded by silens, his half-bestial attendants...and maenads, his female worshippers. ... He is bearded... The conception of the youthful, dissolute Dionysus is unknown to our painter. This is the god of nature and its fruits, not of wine and drunkenness. On the back of the vase is a woman between two horsemen – perhaps a mother whose sons are leaving for the wars. She raises one hand in a gesture of farewell.
Register entry says "Antimenes painter? with characteristic foot of most of the neck amphorae he decorated. Hanyog Bloenh".
Published in Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum; Mr J Green, Union Academique Internationale; 1979 Plate 11
