Figure, D88.226
Physical Description
Light weight and light yellow (natural) wood carving of standing woman with infant on back. Woman with somewhat severe but realistic expression wearing long sleeveless dress with wide shoulder straps. Head covering is likely that of scarf. Infant is held on to her back (mother's) with cloth wrapped around infant and around mothers waist/stomach. Mother has left arm raised against her stomach - over the cloth. Carving has rather a severe precision about it that suggests both talents in both craft and art of artist. General appearance is of nicely carved sculpture little handled and in good condition.
Base of carving has printed on it in pencil "KWAME BEDIAKO" (presumably the artist) and "ACHIMOTA" the location which is within Accra, Ghana. (Carving D88.225 (erroneously labelled F88.225) has same printing plus the date "1954".
