Research Notes
Jos Plateau, Northern Nigeria (Initial/original description is consistent with smoking pipes of this type coming from Jos Plateau, Northern Nigeria. Wood Smoking pipe Wooden smoking pipe, single piece of wood, carved with long bowl, long round stem tapering to smaller round mouth piece, with small 'stand' along stem just down from the bowl. Bowl is at right angle to stem. Wood appeared to be of light colour but stained reddish colour. 'Stand' dyed/inked the colour black. No apparent embellishments. Pipe gives appearance of having had some use, i.e. some patina on stem. Bowl shows little use, but is possible that it has been scrapped to remove burn/'tobacco' residue. Pipe length = 220mm, stem without bowl = 192mm. Bowl length = 73mm. —Joel A Vanderburg
