Waka Huia, Cast, D38.104
Physical Description
Waka huia sides have four human figures stacked one on top of the other down length of box running to human sty;e figures at ends. Eyes are painted silver. Bottom is cracked on one side running from centre end to opposite end and at risk of fracturing away from base. Four human figures top and tail alternatively with interlocking manaia design work. Lid has three fingers at each end which dovetail into a housing at each end of the base. Inside of base and lid uncarved. Two flakes sit in the base. The carving style would seem to be characteristic of Nga Puhi.
