Physical Description

Well executed linear design patterns on base with black painted double haehae pattern with raised red coloured dot half spiral on sides. Human tiki figurine with protruding tongue and koru design on shoulders and legs with manaia design feet. Sideway drilled hole for hanging the waka huia intact at same end. Tiki figure missing from opposite end. Lid has face with protruding tongue covering tongue and grove notch at intact end of lid. A section of the carved relief on lid probably worn off rather than broken.

Research Notes

U shaped oval ended box with flattened base and flat lid. Decoration in usual straps of groove and dot divided into quadrats with the straps curving away from the central point. Lid has curved straps of decoration in four lateral sections. Lid had a tongue on each end that fits groove in box. Knobs on ends are the head and neck of a tiki figure whose body is on the ends and underside of the box. Wood totara (Podocarpus totara).
