Bailer, D18.251
Physical Description
Elaborately carved canoe bailer made from a very twisty grained piece of rimu (Dacrydium cupressinum)
The knob of the handle as well as the back of the scoop is carved in slightly roughly executed designs. In the past there had been a projection from the underside of the handle knob down to the centre [sic] of the scoop but this is now gone leaving only a stump in the centre of the scoop.
Mouth with double tongues and lower jaw adorns the shoulder of the bailer with koru relief pattern radiates around both sides of lip. Carved manaia head on handle end features double interlocking spirals. While the scoop is one single form, the shape of the scoop has two discrete sections, a flattened internal scoop deepens to the rear but the outside bottom is rounded.
